Planning a trip to the Cornish coast soon? There’s plenty going on in Newquay and Cornwall to light up your early spring break, from Easter events for kids to culinary and cultural highlights for the grown-ups. Here are our top five events to look out for, all within easy reach of Hotel Bristol.
5th March: St. Pirran’s Day (Killacourt Green, TR7 1DX)
For all those too shy to ask, St Pirran is the Patron Saint of Cornwall. He is also the source of several legends and the saint of tin miners and quality surfboards (ok, we made the second bit up). Fifteen centuries after the Celt was last seen, Cornwall still celebrates in his name every March- and for many it is the one essential Cornish national festival. Expect to find live music, food, fun for all ages and liveries of black, white and gold (Cornish flags and daffodils feature heavily!).
5th March: The World Pasty Championships (Eden Project)
Should you want to start March with a smile on your face and perhaps a slight bulge around your middle, the World Pasty Championships represent a meaty, tasty helping of fun at the Eden Project. Some might snigger, but creating the perfect Cornish Pasty is serious business these days! The savouries that put Cornwall on the map are celebrated in spectacular fashion here, with many cooks and prize categories. But don’t take our word for it, go and take a big bite! More information can be found on the Cornish Pasty Association site, including a potted history of the Cornish Pasty.
Easter Sunday (27th March): Easter Egg Hunt at Towan Beach with Newquay Lions
Fancy an Easter egg hunt with a difference? The sand and stones of Towan Beach are the setting for this family event hosted by Newquay Lions, a society that combine fun with fund-raising for good causes. Bring a basket and get there for 1pm to track down the treats- and don't forget to give generously.
Easter Weekend (26/27 March) at Newquay Zoo 2016
One of the most popular family attractions in Newquay at any time of year, Easter takes the fun up a notch or two with a special weekend. Lots of things to do for kids, with games and activities galore besides all the usual (and unusual!) animals at Cornwall’s favourite zoo. Keep an eye on the Newquay Zoo website for further details.
28th March: Point to Point Horse Racing at Trebudannon
Place your bets, cross your fingers and get set for a cracking day of horse racing in Cornwall. This is a hotly-anticipated meeting with an open field, guaranteed to produce twists, turns and some unexpected surprises. Add fine local food and drink and you have a cracking day out.
