Are you wondering where to head this October and November in Newquay and Cornwall? Events range from our gloriously gory Zombie Crawl to Truro’s magnificent City of Lights event, while music and culture fans can expect some stellar performances and exciting dates to put in the diary. Here are our top autumn events to look out for in the coming weeks, whether you are planning a flying visit or a long weekend in Newquay:
Truro City of Lights: Cornwall Lantern Festival (23rd November 2016)
For those visiting Newquay a little later in the year, a less grisly and altogether more enlightening event within easy reach is Truro’s fantastic City of Lights Festival. Establishing a brand new tradition is no mean feat in a region with as much tradition as our own, but this curtain raiser has quickly been embraced as one of the best events in Cornwall. Join over 30 000 revellers and witness a bewildering selection of lanterns of all sizes, from the cute to the spectacular! Keep an eye on the Truro City of Lights website for further details and ways to support this great winter event.
Let there be light! (Image credit: Truro City of Lights Facebook page).
It can be bright and busy on the night to say the least, so the best strategy is to find a suitable viewing point through the town centre and get in position early. Do be sure to give generously to the event too, because both good causes and the parade’s long term future depend on public generosity. Newquay Zombie Crawl (Saturday 29th October 2016)
The special costumes and makeup (well, we’re hoping it’s makeup) just get better and better with this brilliant Halloween parade, where youngsters from 6-16 turn up in their hordes to form an army of undead! The drill is simple: everyone meets after dark in a central location (TBC) before descending on the streets in a scarily impressive procession! A camera is an absolute must to get some shots of your own monsters, who should be accompanied by an adult at all times (it can get busy and confusing with all those dead bodies walking around). Live Music at Lusty Glaze Beach (Various dates, Oct-Dec)
Woodburner sessions bring music and culture to the the coldest of Newquay evenings (Image credit: Lusty Glaze Official Facebook)
Like your music live, intimate and authentic? The Sundowner Sessions take place slap bang on Lusty Glaze Beach, Newquay, and have been such a runaway success that even the darkest winter nights tend to be lit up by outstanding acts. This autumn sees some truly stellar dates, with West Country talents Land of the Giants frontman Andy Quick (Fri 21st October) and singer songwriter Noel Prior (Fri 28th October) taking centre stage in an excellent autumn line-up for live gigs in Newquay. See the official site for further info and full Lusty Glaze listings: www.lustyglaze.co.uk
Music and More at The Lane Theatre (Various dates Oct-Dec)
Fancy a taste of local drama, comedy or an evening of live music? The Lane Theatre has several dates to look forward to as we reach the end of the year. Particularly special highlights come with The Producers Blues Band (29th October), in celebratory mood as they perform on their 25th Anniversary Tour. Tribute acts to Joe Cocker and The Beach Boys also feature in November, while you can also get into the festive spirit early by booking a night with the Newquay Male Voice Choir (Fri 11th November). Firework Display on Porth Beach (Sat 5th November 2016)
What better way to celebrate Fireworks Night in Newquay than with the sort of a bang Guy Fawkes himself would be proud of? Just get to Porth Beach and grab a suitable spot as night falls to soak it all in, preferably not too far from organisers The Mermaid Inn. The even better news is that witnessing this special spectacle won't cost you a bean, making it an even more tempting family night out.
