For anyone heading west in early 2018, it promises to be a great year for Cornwall's cultured side. Whether your ideal day out in the county involves natural or manmade beauty, coast or countryside, here are some of our highly recommended attractions and events for late winter and spring 2018, along with some terrific hotel offers for your next trip to Newquay:
Art & Heritage Treasures at Penlee House & Museum
The collections of Penlee House have plenty to enjoy (image: Penlee House Facebook Page)
For anyone who loves history and art, the collection at Penlee House is well worth the drive west to Penzance in 2018. An ever-evolving set of exhibits features everything from beautiful portraits and antiques to photography. Do also keep an eye on their events and workshops listings too. All the information you need is on the website: https://www.penleehouse.org.uk
Tate St Ives
After recent expansion, Cornwall’s finest modern art gallery is bigger and more inspiring than ever (image: Tate St. Ives Facebook)
If you prefer your art of the modern variety, Tate St Ives is a must visit on your next trip to Cornwall. Even if you’ve been before, the new extension to the gallery (completed in October 2017) means that there is more exhibition space than ever (about double the amount as before, to give an idea!). From postmodern sculpture to surrealism you can see, enjoy and discuss it here. http://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-st-ives
Spring Bulb Festivals & Grand Gardens in Cornwall
Whether you wish to stock up on bulbs or simply take a stroll in fabulous surroundings, early spring is a wonderful time for Cornwall’s various garden attractions. Right on our doorstep you have Trerice Manor, which is always wonderful to visit once the early bloom has begun in earnest. A little further east, Llanhydrock is also a joy, whether you peruse the pretty Victorian house and gardens, or opt for pedal power with some wonderfully leafy cycling trails (bike hire is available too).
Various events and expeditions also take place across the county once the days start to lengthen. Few are bigger than the The Cornwall Spring Flower Show (7-8 April 2018). Still going strong after a century, the event brings a show gardens, crafts, activities and entertainment to Boconnoc House, Lostwithiel (above). It’s a great day out, whether you are looking to stock up with plants or entertain the family. More information here.
2018 Events at The Eden Project
No matter whether the sun is beaming or it’s raining cats and dogs, a trip to Eden is a must in 2018. Just when you wonder if it’s possible to pack any more life into one site, the surprises continue. The coming months are no different, and combining your next trip with one of Eden’s brilliant events is especially recommended. Coming up in early 2018, you could enjoy a romantic Valentine’s Dinner, take a giant bite out of the meaty World Pasty Chamionships (March 3rd), or see Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park’s new film “Early Man” in the perfect setting for prehistoric fun.
